Microsoft Teams — How to fix opening with old account
Almost every IT projects these days use MS Teams as their communications platform usually in parallel to another platform like Slack. If this is true in your case, you might have noticed this issue with Teams desktop app — when you try to sign in with the new company account, the desktop app opens up with the old company account and surprisingly there doesn't seem to be an obvious way to get rid of that old account.
Even solutions like clearing cache from the drive and keychain doesn’t seem to fix the issue.
In this article, I will share with you a sure shot way of fixing that issue.
- Sign-in to your new company account via the browser (or via the Teams mobile app)
- Create a meeting and invite yourself (your new email address that you want to use on Teams). Essentially you are inviting yourself! We just need a meeting where you are one of the participants so you have the meeting link
3. Quit MS Teams if already open. This is important, otherwise it will open up the app with the old account again.
4. From the desktop where you want to use the app, open your email client (browser or app) and click the meeting link from the email you just received
5. This will open up the MS Teams desktop app and start the meeting as a Guest (since you are not logged in). Before joining the meeting, you will be able to see a ‘Sign In’ link next to the video preview. Don’t worry if you don’t see or missed this link. The next screen after leaving the meeting will also have a ‘Sign In’ button. Click on that link.
6. Now you will notice, the sign-in form is fresh and will not have the old account details. Yay! Enter your new account details and done!
Something to note — MS Teams will still have your old account but just wont be logged in. If you want to completely delete that account, you would need to do the following:
- Open desktop app
- Profile picture (top right) > Manage accounts
- Click ‘Manage’ against the account you want to delete
- Sign In with the old account details
- Organisations > Leave org
